Approach and anchoring
Access from the sea goes through the Arzal lock, which regulates the Vilaine and sets a non-tidal river upstream. From the lock, follow the marked channel 6 nautical miles to reach La Roche-Bernard. Minimum air draught under the Route Nationale 165 bridge is around 28 metres. VHF 9 for the harbour office, maximum draught 6 metres at the pontoons.
Practical
Three basins: Vieux Port, Port Neuf and Rieux. Water and electricity on the pontoons, diesel fuel berth, crane and boatyard. Sanitary block with showers. Bakery, grocery, restaurants and Intermarché within 600 metres of the Vieux Port.
Ashore
Medieval village of La Roche-Bernard above the port, with granite houses from the 16th and 17th centuries around Place du Bouffay. Saturday morning market on Place du Pilori. GR 39 footpath runs through the village along the Vilaine cliffs.
History
La Roche-Bernard was founded around the 10th century by a Viking named Bernard. The first French ship of the line, La Couronne, was launched here in 1634 for Cardinal Richelieu's navy. The suspension bridge built in 1839 was the largest in the world at the time and destroyed during the 1944 Liberation.
