Free village quay on the Canal latéral à la Marne at Isse, in the Marne department, Champagne region.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reached by the Canal latéral à la Marne, on the pound between Tours-sur-Marne lock and Dizy. No tidal effect. Low speed, 6 km/h, mandatory on the canal. Banks are grass-edged with wooden mooring bollards.
Practical
Two berths along the quay, free of charge. No water and no electricity on site. Closest services at the marina of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, 2 nautical miles west, where water, electricity and a fuel point are available.
Ashore
Isse is a wine-growing village of about 250 inhabitants on the edge of the Montagne de Reims regional nature park. Champagne grower houses in the village offer cellar visits within 300 m of the quay. The Premier Cru slopes of Aÿ and Mareuil lie across the canal within 2 km on foot.
History
The Canal latéral à la Marne was opened in 1867 to bypass the unnavigable stretches of the river Marne and was long used to ship Champagne bottles downstream to Épernay and Paris.
