Approach and anchoring
Reached by the Canal de l'Aisne à la Marne, a Freycinet gauge canal limited to 38.5 m length and 5.05 m beam. Standard inland navigation signage. Locks operated by VNF during seasonal hours. No tidal constraints.
Practical
Small pontoon with a handful of berths alongside. Water point on the quay. No fuel on site. Bakery and small grocery in the village within 300 m.
Ashore
Champagne vineyards of the Montagne de Reims Grand Cru area surround the village, with Sillery itself classified Grand Cru 100 percent. Mumm and Ruinart estates reachable by bike via the Coulée Verte, a greenway following the canal towards Reims at 9 km. Reims cathedral, a UNESCO site, lies 9 km north-west.
History
Sillery gave its name to a champagne house founded in the 17th century by the Brûlart family, Marquis de Sillery. The village was on the front line during the First World War and was rebuilt in the 1920s.
