River quay on the Hérault in Agde, about 4 km upstream from the sea entrance at Le Grau d'Agde, Occitanie.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter the Hérault from the sea via Le Grau d'Agde, then follow the river north into the old town of Agde. No tidal constraint inland, but watch the river current after heavy rain and the low bridge downstream of Agde which limits air draught. Berth alongside the quay on the town side.
Practical
Free or low-cost town quay managed by the municipality, alongside mooring on the stone embankment. Water points on the quay. All shops, bakeries and restaurants within 200 m in the old town. Port du Grau d'Agde 0.4 NM north provides fuel and full marina services.
Ashore
Cathédrale Saint-Étienne, built from black volcanic basalt from the 12th century, stands 150 m from the quay. Musée de l'Éphèbe, dedicated to underwater archaeology and home to the bronze Éphèbe d'Agde recovered from the river, is about 1.5 km downstream. Market on Thursday morning in the old town.
History
Agde was founded around 525 BC by Greek colonists from Phocaea under the name Agathe Tyche and is one of the oldest towns in France. The Hérault river quays were the commercial lifeline for wine, salt and grain exports until the 19th century.
