Approach and anchoring

Approach by sight from seaward, keeping clear of the volcanic reefs east of the Mont Saint-Loup. Sand holding. Exposed to the dominant easterly swell and to the Libeccio from south-west. Useful only in settled weather or with north-west tramontane. Port du Cap d'Agde entrance is 0.6 nm north-west at Quai Commandant Méric, VHF 9.

Practical

No service at anchor. Port du Cap d'Agde is one of the largest marinas on the French Mediterranean coast with 3000 berths, fuel berth, 50-tonne travel-lift and repair yards, 0.6 nm to the NW. Port du Grau d'Agde on the Hérault river mouth sits 0.9 nm north.

Ashore

Plage de la Grande Conque, a black volcanic sand beach, 500 m walk from the marina. Fort de Brescou on its offshore islet, built by Richelieu's order in 1632, visible from the anchorage. Agde old town and its black basalt cathedral of Saint-Etienne 4 km inland up the Hérault.
