Approach and anchoring

Access from the sea via the Grau d'Agde, then 4 km up the Hérault river. Keep to the marked channel, the river silts along the banks. Current can run at 1 to 2 knots on ebb, more after heavy autumn rain. The quay is on the right bank going upstream, just before the Canal du Midi junction at the Écluse Ronde.

Practical

Quay linked to the Marine et Compagnie yard, moorings managed by the yard for work stopovers and short stays. Travel lift on site, dry storage, chandlery. Agde visitors quay run by the town is 200 m downstream for overnight stays, water and power on the town quay.

Ashore

Agde cathedral Saint-Étienne, a fortified basalt church from the 12th century, at 250 m across the bridge. Musée de l'Éphèbe and its Greek bronze find at 1 km. Canal du Midi round lock, the only three-way lock in France, at 400 m upstream. Cap d'Agde beaches and marina at 5 km by road.

History

Agde was founded as a Greek trading post called Agathé Tyché around 525 BC, one of the oldest towns in France. The basalt stone used across the old town comes from the nearby Mont Saint-Loup volcano, last active about 700 000 years ago.
