Open anchorage on rock off Punta d'Omigna, the headland closing the Gulf of Sagone to the north, 1.8 miles from Cargèse on the west coast of Corsica.

Guide

Approach and anchoring

Approach from the south or south-west on sight. Rock bottom with patches of sand, holding is uneven, spot a sand patch before dropping. Sheltered from NW through SE by the headland. Fully exposed to the west and to libeccio swell.

Practical

Fair-weather anchorage only, to be vacated as soon as wind shifts into the western sector. Cargèse harbour is the fall-back 1.8 miles SE, Sagone 6 miles to the east.

Ashore

Genoese watchtower of Omigna stands on the point, built in the 16th century, reached on foot from Chiumi beach. Coastal path toward Cargèse.

History

The Omigna tower belongs to the network of coastal watchtowers raised by the Office of Saint George in the 16th century to warn against Barbary raids along the western Corsican shore.
