Approach and anchoring
Approach from seaward is clear in daylight, entrance marked by jetty lights. Maximum draught 3 m. VHF 9. Shelter from all sectors except west to southwest, where Libeccio can make the berths uncomfortable.
Practical
235 berths with water and electricity. Fuel berth for diesel. Showers and toilets at the capitainerie. Shops and restaurants in the upper village, 400 m climb from the port.
Ashore
Two parish churches face each other across the village square, a Latin Catholic church and a Greek Catholic church, both 19th century, reflecting the Greek colony founded here in 1676. Plage de Pero 2 km north, sand and pebbles. Plage de Chiuni 5 km north, 1 km of sand.
History
Cargèse was settled in 1676 by a group of about 730 Greeks from Mani in the Peloponnese, fleeing Ottoman rule. The Greek rite community persists and the Eastern Catholic church still celebrates the Byzantine liturgy.
Story
Cargèse hosts a physics research centre founded in 1975, the Institut d'études scientifiques de Cargèse, which has welcomed Nobel laureates including Gerard 't Hooft and Frank Wilczek.
