Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach through a narrow channel buoyed between granite reefs. Sand bottom. Sheltered from N, NE, E, S, SE and SW; exposed to westerlies. Water available ashore. Tremazen at 0.5 NM to the W for alternative shelter.
Practical
Drying harbour with a stone quay. Water point ashore. Village of Portsall with bakery, grocery and bar-restaurants within 200 m of the quay.
Ashore
The GR 34 coastal path runs along the shore, the former Sentier des Douaniers. The anchor of the Amoco Cadiz, the supertanker wrecked on the Roches de Portsall in March 1978, is displayed on the seafront as a monument.
History
On 16 March 1978 the Amoco Cadiz grounded on the Roches de Portsall in a gale, spilling 227,000 tonnes of crude oil. It remains one of the largest tanker oil spills ever recorded and led to a tightening of French maritime pollution law.
