Tidal harbour of 100 moorings on the right bank of the Rance estuary, Brittany, at the village of Saint-Suliac listed among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France.

Approach and anchoring

Reached via the Rance maritime, downstream of the Châtelier lock and upstream of the Rance tidal power station barrage at La Richardais. Locking through the barrage required for access from Saint-Malo bay, schedules set by EDF and the Port of Saint-Malo. The harbour dries, mooring on fore and aft lines or on pontoon with drying berths.

Practical

100 moorings, mostly for local boats. Limited visitor capacity, contact the harbour office in advance. Water point on the quay. Village shops, bakery and restaurants within 200 m.

Ashore

The village church of Saint-Suliac, 13th century with fortified bell tower, stands 150 m from the quay. Mont Gareau viewpoint above the village, at 73 m, gives a sweeping view over the Rance at 500 m on foot. Sentier des Douaniers GR34 passes through the village and follows the estuary banks.

History

Saint-Suliac was a sailors' and cod fishermen's village from the 16th to 19th centuries, with men sailing to the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. The remains of a Viking camp dating from the 10th century were identified at the foot of Mont Gareau.
