Approach and anchoring

Access on the rising tide only. Controlling depth at the entrance is around 0.55 m, with the basin drying at low water springs. The channel is marked by withies to be left to starboard coming in. Strong cross-currents run in the Passes at the entrance of the Bassin. Port VHF 9.

Practical

Berths are largely reserved for local oyster boats and resident pinasses. Fuel is available at the port's pump. Showers, water and chandlery are limited. Bakery, grocery and restaurants along avenue de l'Ocean, a short walk from the quay.

Ashore

Beach of La Vigne 200 m west, facing the Passes. Phare du Cap Ferret lighthouse 1.8 km south with a public viewing platform. Oyster shacks of L'Herbe and Le Canon villages accessible by the coastal path, 1.5 km north. Cycle track along the peninsula toward Lege-Cap-Ferret.

History

The harbour was dug in the 1970s for the local oyster fleet and has remained a working ostreicole port. Cap Ferret itself was settled in the 19th century around the lighthouse built in 1840 and rebuilt in 1948 after wartime destruction.

Story

The port is the only artificial harbour on the Cap Ferret peninsula; all other oyster villages, such as L'Herbe and Le Canon, use simple beach moorings.
