Drying tidal harbour on the north shore of the Ile de Re, between Loix and Saint-Martin-de-Re, in the Fier d'Ars.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Dries completely at low water, bottom of mud and sand. Approach via the buoyed channel of the Fier d'Ars between the Pointe du Gros Jonc and the Pointe du Grouin. Enter two hours either side of high water for a keelboat. Strong tidal streams in the pass on springs.
Practical
Small local harbour used mainly by flat-bottomed oyster boats and shallow draught craft. No visitor services on site. Water and basic facilities in the village of Loix at 1 km.
Ashore
Oyster farms of the Fier d'Ars, a Natura 2000 site and nature reserve of 318 hectares with salt marshes and migratory birds. Salt pans of Loix still in production using traditional methods. Cycle path network of the Ile de Re, 110 km of dedicated routes, passes through Loix.
