Approach and anchoring
Mud bottom, three berths logged on the roadstead. Exposed to SE, S and SW winds, sheltered from the N and NE. Approach by day only, the bay dries in parts and the harbour entrance is a tidal lock. VHF 9 for the harbour. Keep clear of the marked channel used by the visitor pontoons.
Practical
Anchorage used as an outer holding area when the wet dock behind the lock is full or closed. All services in the walled town 0.2 NM to the SW: harbourmaster, water, fuel, chandlery, supermarkets.
Ashore
Walled town fortified by Vauban from 1681, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2008 as part of the Fortifications of Vauban. Citadel and star-shaped ramparts open to walkers. Market at the Cours Vauban every morning in season. La Flotte-en-Ré at 2.2 NM to the SE has a medieval market hall.
History
Saint-Martin was the main port of the Île de Ré from the 17th century and the embarkation point for deportees bound for the French penal colony of Cayenne until 1938. The citadel still houses a working prison.
