Approach and anchoring
Sand bottom. Shelter from northwest to north winds along the coast, open to the southwest swell of the Pertuis Breton. Strong tidal streams off the Pointe des Baleines, SHOM chart 7404 advised. Approach only in daylight, keep clear of the rocky shelf extending from the point.
Practical
No facilities. Ars-en-Ré with the Bassin de la Criée and the Bassin de la Prée lies 1,5 and 1,8 nautical miles to the southwest, tide dependent access through a buoyed channel.
Ashore
Phare des Baleines lighthouse, built 1854, open to visitors, 257 steps to the top. Coastal path round the point. Village of Ars-en-Ré at 1,8 nautical miles, listed among the Plus Beaux Villages de France, with its black and white church tower used as a landmark for sailors.
