Guide
Approach and anchoring
Sand bottom, good holding. All round protection from the land, effective only at low water when the sand bar dries. At high water the anchorage becomes exposed across the Traict. Strong tidal streams in the narrow entrance of the Traict, timing the approach on slack water is advised.
Practical
Forain anchorage, no services on the spit. Le Croisic fishing harbour and marina lie 0.7 NM S across the Traict, with a fish auction, fuel berth, water, electricity and all town shops within walking distance of the quays.
Ashore
Sand beach along the whole Pen-Bron spit, 4 km long, with dune vegetation under Conservatoire du Littoral protection. Le Croisic old town across the Traict by dinghy, with 17th century merchants houses along the quays and the fish market of La Criée. Guérande salt marshes begin 2 km to the north-east.
History
Pen-Bron housed a marine sanatorium from 1887, built for children affected by tuberculosis and surgical illnesses. The main building still stands at the end of the spit and has been partly converted into a rehabilitation centre.
