Approach and anchoring

Approach from the Gulf of Saint-Florent heading west past Punta Mortella and Cala di l'Acciolu. Sandy shelf shoals gradually towards the beach; drop the hook on clean sand in 4 to 8 metres. No buoys, no facilities. Shelter from S, SW and SE winds. Libeccio and northerly swell both make the anchorage untenable.

Ashore

Ghignu is inside the Conservatoire du Littoral's Désert des Agriates and sits on the Sentier du Littoral between Saleccia and Malfalcu. Restored shepherds' huts, the paillers, stand just behind the beach. No road, no shops; the nearest village is Casta, about 12 km inland by 4x4 track.

History

The Agriates were farmed in stone-walled fields until the early 20th century and left to the maquis after rural depopulation. The coast was bought by the Conservatoire du Littoral from 1979 onwards to block a planned seaside resort development.
