Approach and anchoring

Approach from the east in the axis of the harbour entrance, staying clear of the drying sands exposed at low water of spring tides. Sand holding, shelter from NW round to SE, fully exposed to the NE. The tidal range reaches 11 m on vives-eaux, so swing and depth must be recalculated on each tide. Binic inner harbour at 0.2 NM NW behind its lock gate.

Practical

No facilities on the mooring itself. Binic harbour has a wet basin of 450 berths behind a gate opening around HW plus or minus 1h30, with water, electricity, diesel and a boatyard.

Ashore

Town centre and shops along Quai Jean Bart, 300 m from the beach. Sentier GR34 passes along the cliff north to the Pointe de Pordic and south to Saint-Brieuc. Beach supervised in July and August. Thursday morning market on Place de l'Église.

History

Binic was one of the principal home ports of the Newfoundland and Iceland cod fisheries in the 19th century. A museum devoted to that trade sits on Rue Clemenceau.

Story

At the peak of the Iceland campaigns around 1890, Binic sent more than 60 schooners every spring to the Dogger Bank and Icelandic waters.
