Sheltered mooring field at Kittery Point, Maine, just inside the mouth of the Piscataqua River near Fort McClary.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
A well-protected harbour with easy entry from the sea. The cove was dredged as a mooring field in 1914 and now holds over 200 moorings shared by sailing yachts, motor boats and commercial fishing boats. Contact the Kittery harbour master on VHF channel 9 or 68.
Practical
Six transient berths and seven transient moorings are managed by the harbour master, bookable up to 20 days ahead. The town dock has a public landing with about 12 feet alongside, petrol and water at the float, a public toilet without showers, plus a general store and post office.
Ashore
Fort McClary, a state historic site with a 19th-century hexagonal blockhouse, stands on the point overlooking the cove. Restaurants and the general store sit at the town wharf.
History
The cove takes its name from Sir William Pepperrell, the Kittery merchant who led the 1745 colonial expedition against the French fortress of Louisbourg.
