Tidal oyster-farming port on the Seudre estuary, in Mornac-sur-Seudre, Charente-Maritime.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Access only around high water through a winding marked channel from the Seudre. The port dries at low water and yachts sit on the mud. Follow the withies carefully as the channel meanders through the oyster parks. L'Eguille lies 1.7 NM east and Chatressac 1.9 NM north-west.
Practical
Mooring alongside the quay among oyster boats and flat-bottomed plates. Limited services, mainly aimed at professional shellfish activity. Village shops, bakery and restaurants within a few minutes on foot from the quay.
Ashore
Medieval village classed among the Plus Beaux Villages de France, with a Romanesque church and whitewashed houses along narrow lanes. Oyster tasting cabins along the channel. Salt marshes and the Coubre forest within cycling distance on the Velodyssee route which passes nearby.
History
Mornac was an active salt port in the Middle Ages before the Seudre silted up and oyster farming became the main activity in the 19th century.
