Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reached by a winding marked channel from the main Seudre estuary between Marennes and La Tremblade. The port dries at low water; entry only from about HW minus 2 to HW plus 2. Buoyed channel, no night entry recommended.
Practical
Drying berths alongside wooden pontoons, used mainly by oyster boats and shallow-draught yachts. Water on the quay. Bakery, small shops and restaurants in the village within 400 m.
Ashore
Velodyssee cycle route passes through L'Eguille, giving access to Mornac-sur-Seudre at 2.5 km and Royan at 15 km. Salt marshes and oyster claires around the port, part of the Marais de la Seudre Natura 2000 site.
History
Like the neighbouring Mornac and Chaillevette, L'Eguille grew on the oyster trade of the Seudre basin, the largest oyster-farming area in Europe. The village has been a port for flat-bottomed oyster boats, the plates, since the 19th century.
