Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the south-west by rounding Manana, or from the north through Herring Gut by the ferry pier. The harbour is open to the south and south-east and exposed to Atlantic swell, so it is best in light summer southerlies. The bottom is uneven, mixing rock, weed and mud.
Practical
Moorings are limited; confirm availability with the harbourmaster or a local lobsterman before leaving the boat for the night. Fresh water is available locally.
Ashore
The village has a general store and inns. Monhegan Island Light, built in 1824 and rebuilt in 1850, houses the Monhegan Museum of Art and History. Seventeen miles of trails cross the headlands and the Cathedral Woods.
History
Monhegan has been an artists' colony since the mid-19th century. Robert Henri, George Bellows, Edward Hopper, Rockwell Kent and three generations of the Wyeth family all painted on the island.
