Approach and anchoring

Enter from the seaward south-west side by rounding Manana and heading up the centre of the harbour, or from the north through Herring Gut, the narrow but deep passage by the ferry pier. VHF 19. The harbour is open to the south-west and exposed to the Atlantic swell.

Practical

Moorings are few; do not leave the boat unattended until a berth is confirmed for the night. Fresh water is available locally. The mud bottom holds reasonably well in settled summer weather.

Ashore

Manana itself is bare and uninhabited. Across the harbour, Monhegan village has a general store, inns and 17 miles of hiking trails leading to high sea cliffs and the Cathedral Woods.

Story

Manana long carried a US Coast Guard fog signal station, manned until automation, and was for decades home to a solitary hermit who kept sheep on the island.
