Approach and anchoring
Reached through The Gut, a half-mile channel crossed by the SR129 swing bridge, which opens on signal. Channel depths run 5 to 8 ft and a strong current sets through on both tides. The yard sits at the western end of the passage.
Practical
Full-service shipyard and marina with haul-out, repair and winter storage. Bittersweet Landing Boatyard lies 0.3 mile across the channel to the east, Ocean Point Marina 1 mile to the west.
History
Albion and Menzies Gamage began building wooden sailing vessels on this point in the early 1850s and launched more than 88 boats over the next 50 years. Harvey Gamage ran the yard from 1924 to 1976 and built over 288 vessels, including the 152 ft schooner Shenandoah, the largest ever launched here, along with Mary Day and the Harvey F. Gamage.
