Boatyard on The Gut at South Bristol, Maine, the narrow channel linking John's Bay to the Damariscotta River.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
The Gut is a half-mile passage crossed by the SR129 swing bridge, which opens on signal but should be called ahead if a strong current is running. The bridge gives 3 ft clearance closed at high water. Depths in the channel run between 5 and 8 ft, with the shallowest water at the bridge, and lobster pot floats are thick on the approach from the Damariscotta side.
Practical
The yard maintains the moorings in The Gut and runs haul-out lifts for storage and repair work. Gamage Shipyard is just across the channel to the west, Ocean Point Marina 1.3 miles to the west.
History
Bittersweet Landing Boatyard was founded in 1990 on the South Bristol waterfront, a peninsula community with a boatbuilding history going back to the 1850s.
