Anchorage in The Gut, the narrow tidal passage that separates Rutherford Island from the mainland at South Bristol, Maine.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
The Gut runs between the Damariscotta River and Johns Bay, with charted depths of 5 to 8 feet and the shallowest water at the bridge. A drawbridge crosses the passage and opens for masted vessels. Current runs hard through the narrows, so time the passage near slack water.
Practical
Holding is in mud. Most moorings here are maintained by Gamage Shipyard and Bittersweet Landing Boatyard, both within 0.5 nm. Gamage Shipyard has fuel, fresh water, showers, laundry and a travel lift on VHF, and takes some transient berths.
History
Gamage Shipyard built wooden minesweepers for the US Navy during the Second World War and launched the schooners Mary Day and Shenandoah, still sailing the Maine coast today.
