Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the NE along the Balagne coast, keeping offshore of the rocks fringing the shoreline. Sand bottom with good holding in 3 to 6 m. Shelter from NE through E to SE; exposed to the N and W libeccio, which raises a heavy swell in the bay.
Practical
L'Ile-Rousse harbour lies 2.6 NM to the E with visitor berths, water, electricity and a fuel berth. Port Eugene Ceccaldi at Algajola is 2.7 NM to the SW, smaller and tide-free, with basic services. No facilities at the anchorage itself.
Ashore
Sand and pebble beach directly ashore. Village of Algajola with its Genoese citadel 2 km to the SW along the coastal path. Tramway de la Balagne narrow-gauge railway runs along the shore between Calvi and L'Ile-Rousse, with a request stop at Algajola 2 km from the cove.
History
The Balagne coast was fortified by Genoa from the 15th century onwards. Algajola citadel, rebuilt after the 1643 sack by the Turkish fleet, still encloses the old village. L'Ile-Rousse was founded in 1765 by Pascal Paoli as a Corsican rival to Genoese-held Calvi.
