Approach and anchoring

Halt on the Meuse below Charleville, reached on the VNF navigable waterway. Locks of Dom-le-Mesnil and Lumes operated from April to October on demand. Quay with bollards, moor alongside. No tidal constraint.

Practical

Eight places along the quay with a freshwater tap. No electricity pillars, no diesel on site. Bakery and small convenience store in the village at 400 m. Full ravitaillement and fuel pontoon at the Halte Nautique of Charleville-Mezieres, 6,5 km downstream.

Ashore

Voie verte Trans-Ardennes along the right bank connects Lumes to Charleville in 40 minutes by bike. Railway marshalling yard of Lumes, 600 m, one of the largest in north-east France and visible from the quay. Fields and farmland of the Meuse plain start at the edge of the village.

History

Lumes grew around its marshalling yard opened in 1922, which served the Ardennes metallurgical industry. The yard was a strategic target during both world wars and suffered heavy bombing in 1944.
