Drying sand anchorage in the Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel, off the Normandy coast north of Granville.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach at half tide or better. The Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel has one of the largest tidal ranges in Europe, over 12 m at spring tides, with strong reversing currents. Protection from SE through W to NW, fully exposed to the N and NE. Drying banks extend far offshore at low water.
Practical
Sand bottom on a drying bank. Not a standing anchorage, used by bilge-keelers and beaching craft waiting for the flood. No services. Hérel marina at Granville lies 9.1 nm E and Port Picain 11.7 nm S for secure berthing.
Ashore
Long tidal foreshore used for cockle and clam gathering at low water. Coastal path GR 223, the sentier des douaniers, runs along the cliffs above the bay. The bay is a Natura 2000 site for wintering waders and brent geese.
