Sand-bottom anchorage in the Chausey archipelago off the Normandy coast, west of Granville.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the east via the Sound of Chausey, respecting the very large tidal range of the Gulf of Saint-Malo, among the highest in Europe with up to 14 m on springs. Streams run strongly through the archipelago. Use a large-scale SHOM chart 7161 and time your approach on the flood.
Practical
Anchor on sand with regard for the depth dropping sharply at low water. Nearest refuge is Hérel marina at Granville, 8.1 NM E, with a tidal sill and pontoons afloat at all states of tide. Port Picain lies 11.5 NM S on the Cotentin coast.
Ashore
The Chausey islands form the largest archipelago in Europe at low water with around 365 islets exposed. Grande Île has a small village, a lighthouse built in 1847 and a 19th century fort. Landing by dinghy at Port Marie on Grande Île, about 1 NM from the anchorage.
History
Chausey granite was quarried from the Middle Ages onwards and shipped to build Mont Saint-Michel abbey, visible 14 NM SE on a clear day.
