Guide

Approach and anchoring

Approach from the W keeping clear of the Grands Cochons rocks marked by a W cardinal. The bar at the river mouth shifts and is best crossed on a rising tide, with enough water from HW minus 2. Shelter from N through E to SE; open to the S and SW swell.

Practical

Mud bottom, fair holding. No services at the anchorage itself. Brest Moulin Blanc marina and Brest Kayak Sante lie about 3.3 NM to the W for fuel berth, water, electricity and a chandlery.

Ashore

GR 34 coastal path runs along the cliffs from Le Pouldu to Doelan, 7 km to the W. Maison-Musee du Pouldu, on rue des Grands Sables, reconstructs the Buvette de la Plage where Paul Gauguin and Paul Serusier lodged in 1889 and 1890. Grands Sables beach is 400 m from the anchorage.

History

Le Pouldu belongs to the commune of Clohars-Carnoet. Gauguin, Serusier, Meyer de Haan and Filiger formed a short Pont-Aven School outpost here in 1889 to 1890, painting the coastline and the inn walls.

Story

Gauguin repainted parts of the Buvette de la Plage dining room himself; the replica in the current museum reproduces those panels from period photographs.
