Approach and anchoring

Enter the rade de Brest through the Goulet, then head east-south-east past the Île Longue naval zone, which must be given a wide berth. The bay shoals progressively towards Daoulas; stop on mud in 4 to 6 metres at low water. Sheltered from NW round to E, open to the SW swell pushed in from the rade.

Practical

No pontoons or services at the anchorage itself. Rostiviec 1 NM NE offers visitor moorings and a slip; Moulin Mer 3 NM SE is a sailing base with water on the quay. Nearest full services and fuel are at Brest or Le Moulin Blanc marina, around 6 NM west.

Ashore

The abbey of Daoulas, founded in the 12th century by the Augustinian canons, sits 2 km from the head of the bay and now houses a cultural centre run by the Chemins du Patrimoine en Finistère. The Daoulas medicinal garden is on the same site. GR 34 coastal path skirts the south shore of the bay.

History

The Rade de Brest has been a French naval base since Richelieu and Colbert built up the arsenal in the 17th century. Daoulas itself grew around its Romanesque abbey, whose cloister dates from the 12th century and is one of the oldest surviving in Brittany.
