Strong tidal streams in the narrows at Les Pierres Sonnantes, where an underwater rock bar makes ringing sounds when the ebb runs over it. Maximum draught at the moorings 1,5 m. Fixed road bridge downstream at an air draught of 14 m at HW springs.
Practical
Mooring buoys and fore-and-aft lines laid by the local association. Slipway on the left bank. Water point on the quay. No diesel on site, nearest fuel berth at Saint-Cast marina 4 NM by sea. Bakery, small grocery and bar in the village of Saint-Jacut at 2,5 km by road.
Ashore
Ruins of the Chateau du Guildo on the right bank just downstream of the moorings, fourteenth century fortress slighted in 1591, listed historic monument and open to visitors in season. GR 34 coastal path crosses the Arguenon over the road bridge and continues around the Pointe du Chevet peninsula. Oyster and mussel beds of the Baie de la Fresnaye visible at low water from the shore path.
History
The Chateau du Guildo was a stronghold of the Penthièvre and Plancy families, where Francoise de Dinan, governess of the young Duchess Anne of Brittany, lived in the late fifteenth century. The castle was ruined during the Wars of the League and never rebuilt.
Story
The rocks of Les Pierres Sonnantes, granite boulders stacked at the narrows, give off a metallic ringing when struck, a geological curiosity noted by nineteenth century naturalists visiting the estuary.
