Approach and anchoring
Reached from San Francisco Bay through the Oakland Inner Harbor between Alameda and Oakland. Estuary channel is dredged for commercial traffic, keep clear of working tugs and the Coast Guard Island piers. Pontoons run along the north bank in front of Jack London Square. Office 510 834 4591.
Practical
Over 500 berths for boats from 25 to 75 ft, transient berths at 1.50 USD per foot per day, 45 USD minimum, 25 USD refundable card deposit. Fuel berth, heads and showers. Free ferry pier to San Francisco and Alameda is on the square. Amtrak Capitol Corridor stops at Jack London Square station next door.
Ashore
Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon on the square, the 1883 waterfront bar where the young Jack London read and drank. The relocated Klondike cabin where London wintered in 1897 sits on the square. Farmers' market on Sundays. Old Oakland and Chinatown six to eight blocks inland on foot.
History
Named in 1951 after Oakland author Jack London, who grew up working the same wharves as an oyster pirate in the 1890s before he started writing. The neighbourhood was the warehouse and rail district of Oakland Inner Harbor, served by the Southern Pacific on Embarcadero West and the Western Pacific on Third Street.
