Approach and anchoring

On the canalised Meuse at PK 93, between écluse 48 de Fumay downstream and écluse 47 de Fépin upstream. Enter the basin by the left-bank cut just upstream of the rail bridge. Depth 2 metres at the pontoons. Headroom 3,70 metres at the Fumay rail bridge. VNF lock hours run from 09:00 to 19:00 in summer.

Practical

Twenty places with water, shore power and pump-out. Capitainerie on quai du Port, sanitary block with showers. Bakery, butcher, pharmacy and two supermarkets within 500 m in the lower town. Fuel by jerrycan from the filling station on avenue Jean Jaurès at 400 m. Train station of Fumay on the Charleville to Givet line at 700 m.

Ashore

Musée de l'Ardoise on rue de l'Hôtel de Ville, at 300 m, traces the slate industry that shaped the town from the XVth century to 1971. Viewpoint of the Roc de Fépin at 2 km, panorama over the Meuse loop. Trans-Ardennes greenway on the left bank, 85 km tarred cycle path from Givet to Charleville-Mézières through the gorges.

History

Fumay quarried purple slate from the XVth century until the closure of the last pit in 1971. Roofs of the Panthéon in Paris and several Ardennes churches were covered with Fumay slate, recognisable by its violet tinge.

Story

The last working slate quarry at Fumay, the ardoisière Saint-Joseph, closed in 1971, ending more than five centuries of continuous slate extraction in the town.
