History
Haybes is called la Jolie since the late XIXth century when the Meuse railway opened it to Belgian tourism. The village was burned on 24 August 1914 by German troops as part of the reprisal destructions of the Ardennes invasion, 61 civilians killed, and almost entirely rebuilt in the 1920s.
Story
A monument on the riverbank lists the names of the 61 civilians shot in August 1914, one of the worst single-village massacres of the opening weeks of the First World War in France.
