Approach and anchoring

Approach from seaward between the Cap Fagnet to the north and the Pointe du Chicard to the south. Sand bottom with rock patches, fair holding on sand. Shelter from NE, E, S and SE. Fully open to the prevailing SW to W, which sends a short steep sea into the bay. Enter the harbour of Fécamp 0.8 NM north-east if it freshens, keeping clear of the jetty heads on the approach.

Practical

No services at anchor. Port de Fécamp 0.8 NM NE has visitor pontoons, water, electricity, diesel on the fuel berth, showers and a boatyard with travel lift. Port à sec Fécamp 1.1 NM east for dry storage and handling.

Ashore

Palais Bénédictine in the town centre, 20th-century neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance distillery and museum dedicated to the Bénédictine liqueur created in Fécamp in 1863. Musée des Pêcheries on the former quayside tells the story of the Grande Pêche to Newfoundland. Sentier des Douaniers climbs from Cap Fagnet with cliff views over the Channel.

History

Fécamp was a ducal seat of Normandy and home to a Benedictine abbey founded in the 7th century and refounded in 1001. From the 16th to the mid-20th century the port was one of the main French bases for the cod fishery off Newfoundland and Iceland.
