Approach and anchoring

Drying channel marked by withies through the oyster farming banks, best approached two hours either side of high water. Shoal draught recommended below 1.5 m at low water springs. Strong tidal streams in the main Bassin channels, reaching 3 knots at mid-ebb. Contact the club ashore rather than by VHF.

Practical

Water on the pontoons, dinghy slip, sailing school dinghies and catamarans. No diesel at the club, nearest fuel berth at Port d'Arcachon across the Bassin. Baker, grocery and restaurants in Claouey village at 200 m. Supermarket in Lège at 4 km.

Ashore

Piste cyclable du Bassin runs along the back of the port, 80 km of bike paths linking the tip of Cap-Ferret to Arès and Arcachon. Oyster huts serving raw oysters in Claouey and at L'Herbe village at 4 km south. Réserve naturelle des prés salés d'Arès at 5 km east, salt marsh with birdwatching hides.

Story

The Bassin d'Arcachon produces roughly 8 000 tonnes of oysters a year, around half of French oyster spat is gathered here each summer before being sold to farms along the Atlantic coast.
