Guide
Approach and anchoring
Castine harbour is a deep, protected anchorage holding lobster boats, pleasure craft and Maine Maritime Academy vessels. The training ship State of Maine lies in the harbour most of the year. Reach the harbourmaster on 207 266-7711.
Practical
Town floats run from 15 May to 15 October, with 12 feet alongside at low water. Daytime tie-up is limited to two hours; overnight dockage is allowed at 3 USD per foot. Fuel, fresh water, pump-out and chandlery are at the town docks and at Eaton's Boatyard.
Ashore
Fort George stands on the high ground above the town, its grass ramparts open year-round. The Castine Historical Society and the streets of clapboard houses sit a short walk uphill from the dock. The Maine Maritime Academy campus and its training ship are along the waterfront.
History
Castine is one of the oldest towns in New England and changed hands between French, Dutch, British and American forces many times. The British built Fort George on the heights in 1779; its earthwork ramparts survive. The Maine Maritime Academy opened here in 1941.
