Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach through the goulet de Brest or directly from the Iroise Sea, then round the Pointe du Grand Gouin into the bay of Camaret. Entry into the Bassin du Nautique is behind the Sillon, the natural shingle spit that protects the harbour. Maximum draught 1.9 m inside the basin. VHF channel 9. Good shelter from westerlies, though the bay is open to the east through north-east.
Practical
100 berths on pontoons with water and electricity. Capitainerie, sanitary block, fuel berth on the adjacent Port Vauban 200 m north. Shops, bakery, fish stalls and restaurants along the Quai Kléber within 100 m.
Ashore
Tour Vauban at the root of the Sillon, built from 1689 to 1695 and listed as UNESCO World Heritage since 2008 as part of the Vauban fortifications. Sentier des douaniers GR34 leaves the port toward the Pointe de Pen-Hir 4 km south, with its 70 m cliffs and the Tas de Pois rock stacks. Alignements de Lagatjar, a Neolithic menhir field, sits 1.5 km west.
History
Camaret was a sardine and lobster port from the 17th to the early 20th century. The wreckage of wooden fishing boats on the Sillon, the cimetière de bateaux, was painted by Eugène Boudin and photographed throughout the 1900s. In June 1694, an Anglo-Dutch fleet was repelled from the bay by Vauban's newly finished tower and Breton militia.
Story
The first submarine to navigate underwater on electric power, Gustave Zédé's Gymnote, was tested off Camaret in 1888.
