Day anchorage off the Calf Islands in Captain Harbor, fronting the Byram shore of Greenwich, Connecticut, in western Long Island Sound.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
A small anchorage lies east of Calf Island and north of the green can buoy GC 1, over sand and mud with good holding. It gives shelter from north-west through south-west winds and stays open to the east. Rocky shoals fringe the Captain Islands, so keep well off the marked dangers and run the buoyed water.
Practical
No facilities at the anchorage. Byram Shore Boat Club lies 0.6 nautical miles north and Belle Haven Club 0.7 nautical miles north-east, both private. Public services are in Greenwich Harbor a short run east.
Ashore
The east side of Calf Island is open from dawn to dusk and has walking trails and wildlife observation points managed by the Calf Island Conservancy. The west side is a bird sanctuary closed to visitors without a permit.
