Guide

Approach and anchoring

Shallow tidal basin, dries at low water over wide sand flats. Enter on a rising tide only and follow the buoyed channel between Port du Bétey and the pier. Sand bottom, shelter from N, NE, E and SE winds, exposed to the westerly swell that pushes in from the Arcachon channel. VHF channel 1.

Practical

One mooring spot only, no visitor services on the anchorage. Port du Bétey 0.5 nm to the north and Port de Fontainevieille 0.7 nm to the southeast handle water, fuel and supplies. Town shops and market 400 m from the pier.

Ashore

Andernos pier is the longest in France at 232 metres, rebuilt in 1964. The Coquillages oyster trail follows the shore east to Fontainevieille, one of nine traditional oyster ports of the Bassin. Roman archaeological site of the 4th century basilica sits next to the church of Saint-Éloi.

History

Andernos developed as a sea-bathing resort after the Bordeaux railway reached Facture in 1841. Sainte-Bernadette parish church holds a Roman wall dated to the 4th century, reused in the medieval apse.
