Small halt of 4 berths on the Seine in the centre of Rouen, at the limit of tidal navigation upstream of Le Havre.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reach Rouen by the Seine, 65 nautical miles upstream from Le Havre. The river is tidal up to the Poses lock and the flood current can exceed 4 knots near the Tancarville bridge. Traffic is controlled by the Rouen VTS on VHF 73, and pleasure craft give way to commercial shipping. Berth downstream of the Pont Guillaume-le-Conquerant, maximum draught 2.6 m. At each turn of the tide a bore runs through and swings the pontoon for about 10 minutes, and passing commercial and police craft throw wake. The harbourmaster works VHF 9 but often does not answer; staff or resident liveaboards help boats berth on arrival.
Practical
Only 4 berths, best booked in season, at around 19 to 25 euros a night. Diesel, water and electricity on the pontoon. The site is a working boat-yard area with an on-site caravan park; the showers, toilets and laundry, about 4 euros a wash, are shared with the campers and are dated. The neighbouring yard un-steps masts for the canals, about 400 euros for two. Historic centre about 2 km, reached by the bike hire station just outside the gate; SNCF station Rouen Rive-Droite at 900 m.
Ashore
The historic centre is about 2 km from the pontoon, an easy bike ride. Cathedrale Notre-Dame of Rouen, painted by Monet in a series of 30 canvases, the Place du Vieux-Marche where Joan of Arc was burned in 1431, and the Gros-Horloge astronomical clock of 1389 all stand in the old town. Restaurants line the quayside by the marina.
History
Rouen was the capital of the duchy of Normandy and a major river port on the Seine from the Middle Ages. Joan of Arc was tried and burned at the stake on the place du Vieux-Marche on 30 May 1431. The city was heavily bombed in 1944 but the cathedral, though damaged, was rebuilt.
