Section of the Seine at Poses in Eure, immediately upstream of the écluse de Poses-Amfreville, the last lock on the Seine before the tidal river to the sea.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Downstream of Poses the Seine becomes tidal and leads 160 km to the estuary at Le Havre. Upstream the river is fully canalised. The lock of Poses is the largest on the Seine, with two chambers of 185 m and 220 m, used by commercial barges and cruise ships.
Practical
Free mooring for up to 72 hours in front of the Musée de la batellerie, which doubles as a tourist office, on bollards and wooden poles. Water and electricity run on tokens bought at the office, 2 euros for 10 minutes of water or one hour of power. Free showers and toilets behind the office, open 8:00 to 20:00. Draught 1.6 m is fine. Contact VNF on VHF 22 for the lock. No shops within easy walking distance, easier by bike.
Ashore
The restaurant L'Auberge du Halage lies a short, easy walk from the quay, with an indoor terrace over the Seine. The Musée de la batellerie by the mooring covers the river barge trade and houses the tourist office. A quiet towpath follows the Seine from the quay.
History
Poses marks the tidal limit of the Seine since the Amfreville-Poses dam was built between 1881 and 1887 to regulate the river and allow year-round barge traffic between Paris and Rouen. The current lock complex was enlarged in the 1960s.
