Marina of 380 berths at the head of the Porto-Vecchio gulf in south-eastern Corsica, below the old Genoese citadel.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the E through the Porto-Vecchio gulf, a deep ria of 3 nm long. Leave the Ile de San Ciprianu and the Tour de Benedettu shoals to starboard. The channel is buoyed to the marina, but expansion works have moved the entrance buoys and charts are not fully up to date, so enter by day. Maximum draught 3.5 m at the pontoons. Fairways and berths between the new piers are narrow and manoeuvring is awkward in wind. Gulf well sheltered from all winds except the Libeccio from SW which funnels down the valley. VHF 9.
Practical
380 berths on pontoons with water and shore power, but the new piers use non-standard outlets, so an adapter must be collected from the office against a deposit of 100 to 200 euros. Guest berths sit on the new piers, a 10 to 15 minute walk through the works to the office and facilities. Showers run on a 2.50 euro token for 7 minutes and close in the evening. Laundry at the office. Auchan supermarket 10 to 15 minutes on foot. Prices are those of a fully operational marina.
Ashore
A free electric shuttle runs to the old town, with a stop near Café la Marine. Genoese citadel built from 1539, upper town reached by a ramp 300 m from the pontoons, bastion De France and Porte Genoise still standing, with the restaurant Casa Corsa in the old town, to be booked ahead. Plage de Palombaggia 9 km south by road, fine white sand and red rocks. Plage de Santa Giulia 7 km south. Aiguilles de Bavella mountain range 30 km inland for hikers.
History
Porto-Vecchio was founded in 1539 by the Republic of Genoa as a fortified outpost against Barbary raids. Malaria from the surrounding marshes made the settlement unstable until the salt pans of the gulf were drained in the 19th century and the town finally grew beyond the walls.
Story
The salt pans at the head of the gulf, now a wetland reserve, were worked commercially until the 1970s and supplied most of southern Corsica.
