Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter the gulf from the east, leaving the Île de San Ciprianu to the north. Îlot Ziglione lies off the eastern shore, about 0.9 NM east of Porto-Vecchio town. The bottom is sticky mud over seagrass and gives excellent holding, among the best in the gulf, though the wind can accelerate across the bay, so lay 40 to 50 m of chain and bring a bucket to sluice the muddy chain on the way up. Sheltered from N through SE, open to the west, and the water is often murky. Watch for poorly marked or submerged mooring buoys behind the islet, whose ground chains can foul an anchor. The posidonia is classified and anchoring on the grass is regulated under the ZMEL scheme.
Practical
Forain anchorage. Land the dinghy at the marina by the fuel station, with bins nearby and a self-service laundry in the marina. A supermarket is within walking distance and a free shuttle runs to the retail park. Port of Porto-Vecchio 0.9 NM west has fuel, water, electricity and a 220-berth marina, with the Marine Group boatyard 0.8 NM west for lift-out and repairs. If the marina is full, Adriano keeps a private pontoon with water and power, on 06 25 50 91 32.
Ashore
Old citadel of Porto-Vecchio, 1 km inland from the port, built by the Genoese from 1539. Saline beaches at Santa Giulia and Palombaggia lie 5 km south with fine white sand.
History
Porto-Vecchio was founded by the Bank of Saint George in 1539 as part of the Genoese fortification of Corsica. The salt pans south of the gulf supplied the Genoese Republic until the 18th century.
