Approach and anchoring

Enter the gulf from the E between Punta di Chiappa and Île de Ziglione, then head W towards the town. A large marina expansion is under way, so the anchorage is now smaller and pushed further east, and the marks near the marina entrance are confusing, follow the buoyed channel. Bottom of sand and mud, good holding but soft in places, so lay plenty of chain. Sheltered from E, SE, S, SW, W and NW and a handy refuge in the Mistral, the main exposure being northerly gusts off the hills. Motorboats and ferries throw a lot of wash by day, calm at night.

Practical

A new fuel station has opened with diesel and petrol, one pump working 24 hours by card, but fresh water is not reliably available ashore. Land the dinghy inside the marina, with recycling bins about 5 minutes' walk north. Large supermarkets such as Auchan are close to the harbour. Marine Group is 0.1 NM W and the Marina de Porto-Vecchio 0.2 NM SW for electricity, showers and a capitainerie.

Ashore

The old town of Porto-Vecchio sits on a granite outcrop above the harbour, inside Genoese ramparts built in 1539. The old salt pans, now a birdwatching site, border the gulf to the north. Beaches of Palombaggia and Santa Giulia, regularly listed among France's best, are 6 to 8 km south of the town by road. A free shuttle runs from near the marina up to the old town.
