Approach and anchoring
Entrance between two jetties on a southward heading, red and green lights at the pier heads. Current can run through the entrance after heavy rain due to Lez outflow. Maximum draught 3.2 metres. VHF 9.
Practical
1100 berths across the Paul Riquet, Saint-Pierre and Quai des Quatre Canaux basins, on pile moorings with no lines provided and narrow berths; there is often no one to take lines, especially out of season, so arrival can be sporty. Rates are low, roughly 11 to 18 euros a night for boats of 10 to 13 metres in the shoulder season. The 24 hour fuel berth takes cards only, no cash, with diesel and petrol. Water and electricity on pontoons. WiFi is installed but often unusable, and there is no laundry at the port. Shops and restaurants line the canal within 200 m.
Ashore
The Léon Vérane tower on the canal, a former water tower, now houses the Albert Dubout museum, and a small cable car links the two banks of the Lez. Beaches lie on both sides of the jetty entrance. Fishmongers set up along the canal every morning and a market fills the quays on market days. The restaurant l'Assiette de la Mer is well regarded. A bus reaches Montpellier in about 15 to 20 minutes.
History
Palavas-les-Flots grew from a fishing hamlet into a seaside resort after the 1872 railway line from Montpellier. The line inspired the Dubout cartoons of the little train of Palavas.
