Short-stay river pontoon at Carnon on the Canal du Rhône à Sète, between the Étang de l'Or and the sea.

Guide

Approach and anchoring

Reached from the canal, not directly from the sea. Vessels arrive from the Étang de Thau to the west or from the Rhône to the east. Fixed bridges on the canal cap the air draught at about 3 metres. Speed limited to 8 km/h. The Carnon sea lock and seaward marina lie just to the south of the canal.

Practical

Short halt intended for canal transit, a VNF pontoon for stops of up to 24 hours with no services. LesCanalous hire base at 0.3 NM to the W and Port de Perols at 0.5 NM to the W for additional mooring options. Full marina services, fuel and shops are at the main Port de Carnon on the seaward side.

Ashore

Beach of Carnon Plage about 800 m south, long stretch of Mediterranean sand. Étang de l'Or, classified Natura 2000 and a flamingo wintering site, starts immediately north of the canal. Montpellier centre is around 12 km inland by road.

History

Carnon was a fishing and salt hamlet before the Mission Racine plan of the 1960s developed the Languedoc coast, turning it into a seaside resort annexed to the commune of Mauguio.
