Approach and anchoring

Reached at the head of the Gulf of Porto-Vecchio, a sheltered bay around 9 km long on the south-east coast of Corsica. The marked channel into the port is buoyed; the approach carries workable depth for the 4 m draught allowed here. The Porto-Vecchio municipal marina, which handles most visitors, lies 0.1 nm to the south-west.

Practical

Being rebuilt and enlarged, with more berths but still only water and electricity on site, no toilets or showers. The floating pontoon rolls in the daytime wash of ferries and passing boats, lies quiet at night and shelters well in strong wind. A boatman, Adriano, helps with mooring; contact is by phone or WhatsApp, payment cash only with no receipt and the rate high. Fuel, capitainerie and full services at the Porto-Vecchio municipal marina 0.1 nm away, with 380 resident and 150 visitor berths. Marine Group workshop on site.

Ashore

A small free shuttle bus runs from the pontoon up to the old town and to a large supermarket. Haute ville of Porto-Vecchio on the hill above the port, with the Genoese bastion and ramparts listed as historic monuments, about 700 m on foot. Palombaggia and Santa Giulia beaches around 8 km to the south by road. Food shops, restaurants and banks on Place de la République, under 1 km from the pontoon.

History

Porto-Vecchio was founded in 1539 as a Genoese fortified town at the head of a natural gulf used since antiquity. The bastions still visible above the port date from that Genoese period.
