Tidal harbour at the mouth of the étier du Pouliguen between La Baule and Le Pouliguen in southern Brittany, 820 berths.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Entrance on the western side of the baie de La Baule, buoyed channel dredged to 1.5 m below chart datum, but the bay is silting and that depth is not always there, so draughts around 1.7 m and over are sometimes turned away. Approach near high water on the leading lights at 53 degrees, and call the harbour office on VHF 9 first for the tide window and a berth. The current runs hard in the étier, strongest on the flood. Visitor berths lie just inside the entrance and roll with swell and passing wash for roughly two hours either side of high water, so moor with long lines; berths deeper in are calmer.
Practical
820 berths split between the Le Pouliguen and La Baule sides of the étier, fuel berth with diesel, water and electricity on the pontoons. A night runs around 40 euros for a boat under 10 m. Sanitary facilities are limited to a couple of showers and their upkeep has drawn complaints of late. Shops, bakeries and restaurants line both quays. SNCF station at La Baule 1.2 km from the Baule pontoons.
Ashore
Sandy beach of La Baule, 9 km long, starts at the eastern quay. Coastal footpath along the rocky côte sauvage begins at the Le Pouliguen side, leading W to the Pointe de Penchâteau at 1.5 km. Covered market of Le Pouliguen on place du Marché, 300 m from the harbour office.
